Peter Obi Nominates Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as Running Mate After Securing NDC Presidential Ticket for 2027
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced that it will not present a presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.Instead, the party says it is open to forming alliances with other political parties in order to support a credible candidate that aligns with national interest.
This decision was made public during the party’s 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where key resolutions were discussed and ratified.
According to the party’s National Chairman, Bala Yunusa Mohammed, the NNPP believes Nigeria is currently facing serious political and socio-economic challenges, and as such, political parties should prioritise national interest over personal or party ambition.
He explained that the party adopted a consensus-based approach for selecting candidates for other elective positions such as governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and state assemblies across the country.Mohammed further clarified that while the party will not field a presidential candidate, it is not yet in formal talks with any specific party. The NNPP intends to carefully evaluate presidential candidates from other parties before deciding on any possible collaboration.
The party emphasised that there are over 20 registered political parties in Nigeria, and it is not realistic for all of them to field presidential candidates simply for participation sake.
The NEC meeting also ratified various decisions from the party’s internal selection processes and approved candidates for different electoral offices.
Additionally, the appointment of an acting national chairman was confirmed following the resignation of the former chairman, who reportedly joined another political party.
Party leaders also highlighted internal challenges, including defections of elected members, but expressed optimism about strengthening the party’s structure ahead of the elections.
Overall, the NNPP says its focus is on strategic partnerships and ensuring that leadership choices are made in the best interest of the country rather than party competition alone.
