Turaki-led PDP relocates convention venue and endorses Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 election after police blockade

The Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria has reportedly changed the venue of its convention in Abuja after police officers blocked access roads leading to the original location.

The initial event was meant to hold at the A-Class Event Centre in the Wuse 2 area of the Federal Capital Territory, but attendees were reportedly prevented from entering the premises due to a heavy police presence and barricades placed on major access roads from both the Wuse and Maitama axes.According to reports, the blockade affected not only party members loyal to the Turaki-led faction but also other road users in the area.

Following the disruption, the faction quickly relocated the convention and proceeded with its planned activities, which lasted for less than 20 minutes.

During the brief gathering, the group reportedly ratified former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.A close ally of Jonathan, Fred Agbedi, received the certificate of nomination on his behalf.Several prominent figures within the faction, including Prof Jerry Gana, Tanimu Turaki, and Adolphus Wabara, were present at the event.

The situation comes amid heightened political tension in the Federal Capital Territory following warnings from the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, advising hotels and event centres against hosting what he described as unauthorised political gatherings.

The PDP faction, however, accused authorities of attempting to frustrate their planned convention, insisting that all necessary arrangements and security notifications had been made.

The group maintained that despite the disruption, their political process would continue, signalling ongoing internal party disagreements and rising tensions ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
