The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has initiated the seizure of R326m in assets belonging to Hangwani Maumela, a key figure implicated in the Tembisa Hospital looting scandal.

The Johannesburg High Court granted the NPA a forfeiture order following forensic investigations that uncovered widespread corruption spanning from 2019 to 2022.Assets include high-value properties in Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape, as well as luxury vehicles like Lamborghinis and Bentleys.

Forensic reports revealed 14 entities linked to Maumela's syndicate allegedly benefited from over R400m in hospital contracts through fraudulent procurement practices.The NPA confirmed irregularities such as fake bidding processes and misuse of funds for bribes and personal expenses.

NPA head Adv Andy Mothibi emphasized that asset forfeiture disrupts criminal networks and upholds justice, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies to combat corruption.

This case underscores systemic issues in public healthcare infrastructure, where mismanagement has led to resource shortages and compromised patient care.
