Khampepe Commission Continues Inquiry into Apartheid Perpetrators
The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has arrested two men in separate investigations into alleged sexual abuse of animals in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
The arrests followed months of investigations by the NSPCA's Special Projects Unit (SPU), which executed search warrants at properties in Volksrust and Mahlabatini.A total of two dogs and 15 goats were removed from the properties and placed under NSPCA care.In Volksrust, inspectors found a male and female dog, with one matching a dog in video evidence. The dogs were taken to a safe location for forensic examinations, and the suspect remains in custody. In Mahlabatini, 15 goats were removed, with evidence suggesting at least three had been sexually abused.A teacher arrested in KZN was released pending police investigations. The NSPCA believes the suspects may be linked, though this remains under investigation.Senior Inspector Arno de Klerk emphasized the complexity of such cases, noting they often take months to resolve. The NSPCA reiterated that bestiality is a criminal offense under South African law and urged the public to report suspected abuse anonymously. The cases highlight growing concerns about animal cruelty and the importance of public cooperation in investigations.
