United States expands coordinated Ebola response funding and support across DRC, Uganda, and regional partners
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has joined other leaders and local communities in opposing the establishment of a 50-bed Ebola containment centre in Laikipia, Kenya, planned by the United States.
The opposition stems from concerns about public safety, cross-border disease transmission, and the lack of consultation with residents in neighbouring counties.
Kahiga emphasised that Nyeri shares close trade, transport, and family ties with Laikipia, meaning any health risks there could directly affect his county.
He has called on the National Government and Ministry of Health to pause the project until full stakeholder consultations are done and for all technical, environmental, and safety reports to be shared publicly.
The centre is intended to manage Americans exposed to Ebola, following a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has seen over 1,000 infections and more than 200 deaths in just 11 days.
Governor Kahiga highlighted the importance of transparency and public confidence in implementing health initiatives, stressing that the people of Nyeri must be reassured about their safety and benefits of the facility. The call reflects growing public scrutiny and concern over foreign health interventions in Kenya.
