Omar Abdullah Urges Government to Show Compassion Towards Sonam Wangchuk on Hunger Strike

In a recent statement, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the need for humanity and compassion in politics while criticising the Central government for not engaging with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for 19 days at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Abdullah noted that the activist has lost around 9 kilograms and his health is deteriorating, yet the government has made no attempt to meet him or persuade him to end the fast.He compared this situation with the Anna Hazare protest during the UPA era, when ministers were sent to initiate dialogue.

The chief minister emphasised that politics must leave space for empathy, especially when protesters are raising legitimate concerns about justice in examinations.

Abdullah also mentioned that his party could not fully join the protest due to the recent passing of his uncle, Mustafa Kamal, but expressed concern for Wangchuk's wellbeing.

He affirmed that the demands of the protesters, including those from the Cockroach Janta Party, are not unjust and deserve attention from the authorities.

This development has sparked discussions on how the current government handles public agitations and the importance of addressing student-related issues promptly to prevent further escalation.

Abdullah's remarks come amid growing support for Wangchuk from various political and civil society quarters, underscoring the broader implications for democratic dialogue and administrative responsiveness in India.
