One person killed and seven injured after dynamite explosion at Mwanza coffee shop

One person has been confirmed dead and seven others injured after a dynamite explosion that occurred on July 1, 2026, at a coffee shop located along Sahwa ya Juu Street in Lwanhima Ward, Nyamagana District in Mwanza Region.

According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander, DCP Wilbrod Mutafungwa, the deceased, identified as Mr Marco Msenyerei, aged 52, was a resident of Semba-Lwanhima and worked as a stone cutter.He was reportedly drinking coffee with colleagues while carrying a bag containing dynamite at the time of the incident.Preliminary police investigations indicate that the explosion happened due to careless handling of the explosive materials.

It is reported that Mr Msenyerei sat near a burning charcoal stove while the dynamite was in his possession, and the heat from the stove is believed to have triggered the explosion.The blast caused immediate injuries to several people who were present at the scene.

The injured individuals have been identified as Daudi Joseph Baraka (54), Emmanuel Luhangwa Joseph (40), Yusufu Rajabu Nasoro (20), Zawadi Ndukeji (27), James Hussein Ntugo (33), Joseph Muyagingwa (22), and Marco Chandanoba (45).

All victims were rushed to Nyamagana District Hospital (Butimba) for urgent medical attention, while one critically injured patient was transferred to Bugando Regional Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Authorities stated that the scene was later inspected by police in collaboration with experts from the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) and the Mwanza Regional Minerals Commission.Officials confirmed that the area was declared safe for public use after assessment.Investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident are still ongoing.
