Research has uncovered a troubling trend on 4chan, where anonymous users, often male, are requesting and creating nonconsensual sexualized deepfake images of women.
These requests, posted in threads specifically dedicated to 'adult requests,' involve images of women who may be publicly visible on social media.Users request these altered images to depict women undressed, engaged in sexual acts, or in humiliating scenarios.
The individuals who manipulate the images are referred to as 'wizards' and are praised for their work, creating a hierarchical dynamic that reinforces misogyny.
This activity is not isolated but often connected to personal relationships, including family, colleagues, or acquaintances, making the abuse more targeted.
Researchers, including Leonie Oehmig from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, note that these deepfakes spread beyond 4chan to private platforms like Telegram and Discord. While some claim the content is for personal entertainment, others use it to harass, humiliate, or intimidate victims. The scale of this coordinated digital abuse is significant, with over 100,000 posts identified in a three-month period.
The research highlights not only the cultural normalization of such behavior but also the potential for monetization, as 'wizards' direct others to platforms suitable for financial transactions. This phenomenon underscores the urgent need for accountability in digital spaces and the protection of individuals against synthetic sexual abuse.
