Opposition leaders condemn alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal, raise concerns over security lapses

Opposition leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, strongly condemned an alleged attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The incident reportedly occurred when Banerjee went to meet families affected by post-poll violence.

According to allegations made by the TMC, a group of individuals pushed and physically assaulted him despite security personnel attempting to protect him.The situation escalated further as women in the crowd allegedly threw eggs and sandals, while slogans such as “chor chor” were raised against him.Reports also suggested that Banerjee had to wear a helmet for protection and his shirt was torn during the incident.

Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the attack, accusing the BJP of promoting violent politics and stating that ‘rulers have become killers’, reflecting her sharp condemnation of the situation.

Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed concern, stating that the lack of adequate security arrangements indicated political vendetta and failure in governance. He urged both the West Bengal and Union governments to ensure the safety of opposition leaders.

Akhilesh Yadav also blamed the BJP-led state administration for deteriorating law and order, alleging a conspiracy behind the absence of police deployment in a sensitive situation.

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya denied any involvement of his party, stating that the incident could be a reaction of public anger against the ruling TMC and emphasised that violence has no place in democracy.

The incident has triggered a sharp political blame game between ruling and opposition parties over security, governance, and political violence in the state.
