PM Shehbaz Urges Diplomacy as Israel-Iran Tensions Escalate Despite Fragile Ceasefire
Islamabad has issued a strong warning to New Delhi, stating that any attempt by India to block water flowing into Pakistan would be treated as a serious escalation and could amount to an “act of war.
” The statement came from Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi during a weekly press briefing, responding to recent remarks by Indian Water Minister CR Patil, who suggested that India is working to ensure that “not a single drop of water” reaches Pakistan.
The spokesperson stressed that such actions would be a violation of international obligations, particularly the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the distribution of water from six rivers shared between the two countries.
Pakistan said it would take all necessary measures to protect its economy, national interests, and the livelihoods of its approximately 250 million people, who depend heavily on river waters originating in India.
The FO also urged India to act responsibly, honour its commitments under international law, and avoid statements that could further heighten regional tensions.
It reiterated Pakistan’s position on Kashmir, describing Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, while contrasting it with Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The article also references broader geopolitical concerns, including Pakistan’s remarks on regional security and strategic stability, though the central focus remains the escalating rhetoric over water sharing.
The situation comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions after India’s reported suspension of aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty in 2025, following security-related accusations which Pakistan has denied. The exchange highlights growing strain in India-Pakistan relations over shared water resources and regional security issues.
