The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs conducted an urgent oversight visit to the Musina Repatriation Centre in Limpopo following reports that approximately 37,000 migrants had been processed through the facility.

The committee's two-day inspection aimed to assess operational efficiency and address challenges like funding shortages, which emerged as a critical issue during the briefing.

Chairperson Mosa Chabane highlighted the inter-ministerial collaboration in establishing the centre and acknowledged the role of churches and NGOs in providing humanitarian support.Officials assured the committee that all processed individuals had been accounted for, with no backlog reported.

The visit followed the closure of the Durban Repatriation Centre and intensified calls from anti-migrant groups for undocumented nationals to leave South Africa.

Tensions remain high amid ongoing protests and the June 30 deadline imposed by some advocacy groups, creating a complex humanitarian and administrative scenario affecting Malawian nationals and others.The committee emphasized the need for sustained oversight to ensure orderly repatriation processes.
