LSK warns government over enforcement of Finance Act 2026 and signals possible legal challenge
Kenyan anti-narcotics detectives have intercepted a suspected drug trafficker during a routine inspection on a Nairobi-bound passenger bus, recovering 300 grammes of heroin valued at approximately Sh1 million.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) under the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway at Taru.
Acting on intelligence reports that narcotics were being transported using public buses from the Coast region to Nairobi, detectives mounted a targeted roadblock and stopped the vehicle for inspection.During the search, officers identified Seat No.29 where a 38-year-old suspect, Brian Tabu Owuor, was seated.A brown travel bag in his possession was found to contain four sachets of heroin, which collectively weighed 300 grammes. In addition to the drugs, detectives also recovered Sh95,000 in cash, which investigators believe could be proceeds from illegal narcotics trade.
The DCI stated that the interception represents a significant disruption to organised criminal networks that exploit public transport systems to ferry drugs across different regions of the country. The suspect was immediately arrested and taken into custody as he awaits processing and subsequent arraignment in court.Authorities have secured both the heroin and the cash as exhibits for use in ongoing investigations.
Detectives are now working to establish the source of the drugs, the intended destination, and whether the suspect was acting independently or as part of a larger trafficking syndicate. The case underscores continued efforts by Kenyan law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking along major transport corridors.
