Philippines and Vietnam strengthen strategic partnership in high-level talks in Malacañang

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.welcomed Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Malacañang Palace on Monday morning for high-level bilateral talks aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership between the Philippines and Vietnam.Tô Lâm arrived in the country on Sunday with his delegation and was formally received at around 9 a.m., where he was greeted with full arrival honors including the playing of national anthems and a 21-gun salute.Both leaders later inspected the honor guard and were introduced to members of their respective delegations.

Among the Philippine officials present were key Cabinet members including the Secretaries of Defense, Interior and Local Government, Justice, Agriculture, Information and Communications Technology, Trade, and Tourism.

During the visit, President Marcos was also seen personally driving a golf cart inside the Malacañang grounds, carrying the Vietnamese leader and the First Lady in a gesture highlighting the cordial nature of the visit.

The bilateral talks are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in several areas, including trade and investment, food security, defense and maritime affairs, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both leaders are also set to witness the signing of various agreements and hold a joint press conference, followed by a state luncheon hosted by Marcos in honour of the Vietnamese delegation.

The visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Vietnam and the 10th year of their strategic partnership.

Vietnam remains the Philippines’ only strategic partner in Southeast Asia and is home to more than 7,000 Filipinos, further highlighting the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries.
