Pakistan plans dedicated WAPDA Security Force to protect water infrastructure and project sites
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on Youm-e-Takbeer (May 28), described the day as a defining milestone in Pakistan’s history when the nation demonstrated unity, resolve and courage by becoming a declared nuclear power.
He said that in response to India’s nuclear tests in 1998, Pakistan conducted its own nuclear tests on May 28, restoring strategic balance in South Asia and sending a strong message that the country would not compromise on its defence and sovereignty.
The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan’s nuclear capability continues to serve as a key deterrent against hostile intentions and remains central to safeguarding national security.
He paid tribute to key figures and contributors of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, including Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Dr Samar Mubarakmand, as well as scientists, engineers, armed forces personnel and other contributors whose efforts strengthened national defence capabilities.He said the programme was achieved despite international pressure, sanctions threats and economic coercion.
Shehbaz Sharif further remarked that Pakistan responded with wisdom and resolve to regional challenges and reaffirmed that the country stands united against any aggression.He emphasised that Pakistan has no aggressive intent but retains the full right to defend its territory and sovereignty.
Referring to recent security developments, he mentioned ongoing threats from proxy networks and reiterated the state’s commitment to countering them through national resolve and coordinated efforts.
The Prime Minister concluded by urging continued national unity, peace, stability and progress, stating that Youm-e-Takbeer represents self-respect, sacrifice and the collective commitment to defend the homeland.
