NSCDC arraigns 24 suspects for unauthorised lithium mining in Nasarawa
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested three officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in connection with the death of Deputy Superintendent of Corps (DSC) Agada Levi Agada, who died while on duty during an operation in Rafin Gabas, Agwada area of Nasarawa State. The arrested officers include Simeon Yakubu Anyebe, Ibrahim Ayefu, and ASC Iwodi Obochi, all linked to the NSCDC Mining Marshals unit.
According to police sources, the arrests followed an investigation by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) after a petition was submitted by the deceased officer’s family lawyer seeking a full probe into the circumstances of his death.During the investigation, authorities reportedly traced over ₦2 billion in suspicious transactions to a Zenith Bank account belonging to Sgt.Jibril Labaran, another NSCDC Mining Marshal, with alleged money movements between multiple suspects. The suspects were said to have been arrested at a correctional facility where they had gone to visit a remanded individual linked to the case.Police also claim that several invited NSCDC personnel, including senior commanders, failed to honour interrogation invitations. The investigation is also examining allegations that NSCDC leadership may have attempted to interfere with or redirect the probe internally.
The family of the deceased has raised concerns over conflicting accounts of how Agada died, with reports ranging from bandit attack claims to suggestions of accidental discharge from an NSCDC officer’s firearm.Medical information from FMC Keffi reportedly indicated that the fatal injury was a gunshot wound, further deepening suspicion around the case. The family has also complained about irregular handling of Agada’s remains, withheld personal belongings, and unreturned mobile phones.
They further alleged that only ₦3 million was later sent as burial support, which they believe does not clarify the circumstances surrounding his death. The case remains under active investigation by police authorities.
