Portable Says Nigerian Celebrities Fear Speaking Against Insecurity Due to Possible Government Reprisals

Popular Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, better known as Portable, has reacted to calls for Nigerian celebrities to publicly speak against the country’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

His comments came after British-Nigerian rapper Skepta encouraged Nigerian public figures to use their platforms to demand accountability and justice over the challenges facing citizens.

According to Portable, many celebrities are deeply concerned about the state of the country but are afraid of speaking openly because of possible consequences from authorities.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, he thanked Skepta for remembering Nigeria and for using his voice to discuss the issues affecting the nation.

Portable argued that Nigerians living abroad are in a better position to criticize insecurity and government actions because they are outside the reach of local authorities.

He claimed that celebrities and other public figures residing in Nigeria risk arrest, persecution, or other forms of punishment if they openly condemn the government or speak strongly about insecurity. The singer stated that some individuals are still allegedly facing consequences because of comments they made in the past.He also suggested that public figures could face restrictions if they express opinions considered unacceptable by those in power.Because of these fears, he said many celebrities choose to remain silent despite being frustrated by the situation in the country.

Portable emphasized that his primary focus is improving his personal welfare and making a living, while maintaining that silence from celebrities should not be interpreted as indifference.

He insisted that many entertainers are tired of the insecurity challenges affecting Nigeria but believe it is safer for Nigerians in the diaspora to lead public criticism and advocacy efforts.
