Potential tropical cyclone Kiyapo and southwest monsoon bring significant rainfall to Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued warnings about significant rainfall from a potential tropical cyclone, currently a low pressure area (LPA), and the southwest monsoon during the week.

The LPA, which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on July 22, has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression named Kiyapo.This storm could become the Philippines' 11th tropical cyclone of 2026 and the fourth for July.

PAGASA forecasts that the potential Kiyapo may bring heavy to intense rain (100-200 mm) to regions like Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur from July 24 to 25.

Additionally, the southwest monsoon is expected to cause moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm) in areas such as Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Negros Occidental.Floods and landslides are possible in these regions.The storm is projected to head west-northwest toward Northern Luzon from July 24 to 25, potentially affecting Central and Southern Luzon.

PAGASA also released a three-day rainfall outlook for areas impacted by the southwest monsoon, emphasizing the need for vigilance against flooding and landslides.

The LPA was last spotted 940 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon on July 22, and its trough is already causing scattered rain and thunderstorms in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, and Romblon.The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, may experience isolated rain from localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja noted that the potential tropical cyclone could reach tropical storm intensity, with the highest possible wind signal being Signal No.2.
