Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister, Endorses Successor Amid Labour Party Challenges
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Advocate Amjad Hussain was elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the position.With this development, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister in the history of Gilgit-Baltistan.
He was elected to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from the GBA-1 constituency and is currently serving as the president of the PPP's Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.The election followed a series of unopposed selections for key positions in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
Earlier, PPP's Imran Nadeem was elected Speaker, while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Malik Kifayat ur Rehman secured the office of Deputy Speaker.Both candidates were elected without contest after no rival nominations were filed before the deadline.
Assembly members and political leaders congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and expressed hope that they would strengthen democratic practices and ensure the smooth functioning of the legislative house.The developments come after the June 7 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, in which the PPP emerged as the largest party with 13 seats.The PML-N won nine seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) secured six.Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and one PTI-backed independent candidate won a seat each.Following the election results, the PML-N and IPP decided to support the PPP for the positions of Chief Minister, Speaker, and Deputy Speaker.
The PPP has announced that it will form the Gilgit-Baltistan government with the backing of both parties, creating a coalition administration in the region.
