Iran–US technical-level talks scheduled in Switzerland, FO confirms follow-up to Islamabad MoU
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, US Vice President JD Vance and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani addressed a summit in Burgenstock, Switzerland, ahead of crucial quadrilateral talks involving the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar.
The discussions are focused on implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on June 17, which established a framework to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease restrictions on Iran and continue negotiations on broader regional security issues.During the summit, PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the negotiations would promote peace, progress and prosperity at both regional and global levels.
He welcomed the gathering as the result of sustained diplomatic efforts and praised Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir for his role in advancing the peace process.JD Vance described the meeting as historic and stressed that lasting peace requires compromise from all sides.He stated that the United States is prepared to improve relations with Iran if Tehran permanently abandons any nuclear weapons ambitions.
Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to mediation and announced the formation of technical and specialised working groups to negotiate the final clauses of a comprehensive agreement.Additional monitoring groups will oversee implementation of the MoU and track progress towards a final settlement.Alongside the quadrilateral talks, bilateral and tripartite meetings were held among participating delegations.
Key topics include Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, unfreezing Iranian assets, oil exports, the Lebanon ceasefire and broader regional stability.Officials from all sides indicated that negotiations could continue as long as necessary to achieve a durable and comprehensive agreement.
