Iran–US technical-level talks scheduled in Switzerland, FO confirms follow-up to Islamabad MoU

The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan has announced that technical-level talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to take place in Buergenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday.

These discussions are being held as a follow-up to the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which aims to advance understandings reached between the two sides under a broader peace framework.

According to the FO, representatives from both the United States and Iran will participate in the talks, along with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, reflecting Islamabad’s continuing role as a key facilitator in the diplomatic process.

The announcement comes shortly after reports of a landmark 14-point agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acting as a mediator. The deal is being described as a major breakthrough intended to end prolonged hostilities and restore regional stability.

Under the reported framework, both sides have agreed on steps including ending conflict-related tensions, reopening the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping, and easing economic restrictions, including oil sanctions imposed on Iran.

US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, have indicated that negotiations are progressing positively, although Washington maintains a strong negotiating position.Senior US envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are reportedly already present in Switzerland ahead of the talks.

On the Iranian side, officials have reiterated that they expect commitments from the US to be fully implemented, warning that any failure could jeopardise the agreement.Iran has also emphasised concerns related to regional security, particularly urging action regarding ongoing attacks in the Middle East.

The upcoming talks are therefore seen as a crucial step in determining whether the fragile understanding between the two countries can move towards a lasting peace arrangement.
