During an interview with Global News, Smith expressed surprise that the Forever Canadian movement, which advocates for Alberta's continued participation in Confederation, does not disclose its funding sources.She noted that election officials have stated these groups are not required to reveal their financial backers, a claim she finds unexpected.

Thomas Lukaszuk, a representative of the Forever Canadian movement, criticized Smith's remarks as politically motivated, accusing her of attempting to stoke separatist sentiments for her own gain.

Lukaszuk emphasized that the movement adheres to provincial election laws, which allow third-party groups to operate without disclosing their donors unless requested by Elections Alberta.
