President Samia to Strengthen Tanzania-Russia Relations During State Visit and Economic Forum Participation

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to undertake a state visit to Russia from 3 to 5 June 2026 following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the Directorate of Presidential Communications, the trip is considered historic because it will be only the second visit by a Tanzanian Head of State to Russia, following Mwalimu Julius Nyerere's visit in 1969.

During her stay, President Samia is scheduled to hold official discussions with President Putin at the Kremlin, where both leaders will focus on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, education, science and technology, energy, mining, agriculture, infrastructure and tourism.

The visit forms part of Tanzania's broader economic diplomacy strategy aimed at attracting investment and strengthening international partnerships.

President Samia will also participate in the 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2026), where she is expected to present Tanzania's economic transformation agenda, including the implementation of Tanzania Development Vision 2050, industrialisation efforts, special economic zones and reforms to improve the business environment.

In addition, she will attend the Tanzania-Russia Business and Investment Forum, which seeks to increase bilateral trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.Current annual trade between Tanzania and Russia stands at approximately 307.5 million US dollars.

Several cooperation agreements are expected to be signed in areas including higher education, science and technology, investment and information and communication technology.

During the visit, President Samia will also receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree from RUDN University in recognition of her leadership, educational reforms, diplomatic efforts and contribution to promoting Tanzania internationally.

Officials expect the visit to further strengthen diplomatic ties and showcase Tanzania as a stable and attractive destination for investment and tourism.
