Chadema Faces Renewed Internal Dispute Following Return of Controversial Member
Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has instructed the Minister of State in the PMO-RALG to review and amend the law governing elections of Deputy Mayors and Vice-Chairpersons of district councils.
He highlighted that the current system distracts leaders from delivering public services as they focus too much on political competition and preparing for upcoming elections.
Speaking in Manyoni District during the launch of a Sh28 billion water project covering 28 towns, Dr Mwigulu emphasized that leaders sometimes prioritize political supporters’ interests over accountability and public service.
He warned that those engaging in corruption or abuse of office, including former finance and accounting officials allegedly involved in embezzlement of Sh500 million, must be traced, arrested, and required to repay the funds.
On electricity issues, he noted that occasional rationing is due to high demand exceeding generation capacity, and the government is investing in projects like the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to stabilize supply.
Dr Mwigulu concluded by asserting his commitment to defending citizens’ rights and confronting challenges head-on, drawing a comparison to David and Goliath. The reforms aim to ensure leadership elections do not compromise development priorities and service delivery.
