Government launches full investigation into Utumishi Girls Academy fire that killed 16 students
Content creator and influencer Pritty Vishy has publicly criticised Kenya’s women representatives over what she describes as their silence following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
The incident, which reportedly claimed 16 lives and left more than 70 students injured, has sparked national concern about the safety and welfare of learners in boarding schools across the country.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Pritty Vishy questioned why several elected women leaders had not issued public messages of solidarity or addressed the tragedy in a more visible manner.
She specifically mentioned a number of women representatives, including Esther Passaris, Linet Toto, Sabina Chege, Gladys Boss, Elsie Muhanda, Betty Maina, Dorice Donya, Catherine Omanyo, Joyce Kamene, Faith Gitau, Rahab Mukami, Rebecca Tonkei, Beatrice Kemei, Zamazam Mohammed, and Naomi Waqo, suggesting that they had not adequately responded to the incident affecting women and children.
She further argued that some leaders appear more active in public appearances and events than in addressing urgent crises affecting their constituents. Her remarks quickly spread online, generating mixed reactions from Kenyans.
Some supported her sentiments, questioning the effectiveness of women representatives and their constitutional role, while others felt expectations placed on elected leaders may sometimes be unrealistic or politically motivated. In addition to the public debate, the story of the fire continues to unfold, with police launching investigations into suspected arson.
Reports indicate that 30 students have been detained to assist with inquiries into the cause of the fire, which has deeply shaken the school community. Some students were initially allowed to go home but were later recalled as investigations intensified. The tragedy has intensified discussions around school safety, accountability, and leadership response during national emergencies.
