Probation Officer Julius Irungu Njogu Faces Bribery Charges in Anti-Corruption Court

Principal Probation Officer Julius Irungu Njogu has been arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on bribery charges.According to court documents, Njogu allegedly solicited KSh 170,000 from a member of the public on behalf of Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi.

The charge sheet states that Njogu approached Peter Njihia Njuguna at Kangema law courts and requested the bribe in exchange for Mutegi delivering a favourable sentence in a criminal case.Njogu denied the charges, entering a plea of not guilty, and was released on cash bail of KSh 400,000.His co-accused, Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi, failed to appear in court and was directed to take his plea on July 30.The two were arrested by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) on July 16.

The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption within Kenya's judicial system, with prosecutors emphasizing the violation of Section 6(1)(a) of the Anti-Bribery Act.This incident underscores the seriousness of bribery allegations against public officials and the legal mechanisms in place to address such crimes.
