James Orengo reports alleged attacks on his convoy during Homa Bay political tour
On Monday, Nanyuki town witnessed tense scenes as hundreds of residents protested against a proposed Ebola quarantine and isolation facility at Laikipia Airbase.Initially, the demonstrations were peaceful, with residents marching and carrying placards rejecting the plan. However, when demonstrators tried to access the military installation, they were blocked by heavily armed Kenya Air Force personnel. The situation quickly escalated into confrontations, with anti-riot police firing tear gas and warning shots to disperse the crowds.Panic spread among local traders and residents, forcing shops to close temporarily and causing disruptions in the Central Business District.
The protests are driven by public concern over reports that Kenya might host an Ebola treatment centre under a proposed international agreement involving the United States.
Legal action is also ongoing, with the High Court issuing conservatory orders preventing the admission or transfer of Ebola-exposed individuals into the country pending further hearings.Authorities have emphasised that any Ebola-related facility must comply with Kenyan law and health regulations.Local leaders and organisations, including the Law Society of Kenya, have raised objections, citing risks to tourism and public safety.Security remains heightened as police patrol key areas to prevent further clashes.
