Hundreds of Basilan local leaders join Bangsamoro Federalist Party ahead of BARMM parliamentary elections
Regional political parties in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have expressed support and appreciation for the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) following its assurance of neutrality in the upcoming September 14 parliamentary elections.
Officials from various regional groups said the commitment is important in ensuring that the first-ever BARMM parliamentary elections will be conducted without external political interference.
Muslim Sema, president of the Bangsamoro Party of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and a key regional official, welcomed the statement and stressed the importance of a peaceful and fair electoral process.He noted that their party aims to help ensure credible elections in the region.
OPAPRU Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento previously reiterated the agency’s neutral stance during a press briefing, which was well received by several Bangsamoro leaders.
Lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo of the Bangsamoro Federalist Party also expressed gratitude, highlighting their party’s readiness to support Comelec in maintaining orderly elections.He added that their group, which includes members across multiple local governments, is committed to peaceful participation in the polls.Governors Mamintal Adiong Jr.of Lanao del Sur and Mujiv Hataman of Basilan likewise expressed optimism about the upcoming elections, describing them as a milestone for the region since the establishment of BARMM in 2019 under peace agreements between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).The BARMM replaced the former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and now includes several provinces and cities in the south.
Regional parties collectively emphasized their commitment to stability, peaceful campaigning, and respect for democratic processes as the region prepares for its historic parliamentary elections.
