PM Shehbaz Sharif addresses National Assembly and welcomes progress towards a US-Iran peace agreement
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan has announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Muharram was not sighted anywhere in the country on June 15, 2026.
Following a meeting held in Lahore, committee chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad confirmed that the first day of Muharram 1448 AH will fall on June 17, while Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, will be commemorated on June 26.
The announcement aligns with earlier forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which had stated that the moon was unlikely to be visible because the time between the moon's birth and sunset was too short for crescent sighting.
The PMD had also noted that weather conditions were expected to remain clear in several regions of the country, but astronomical factors made sighting improbable.Muharram is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam and holds deep religious significance for Muslims around the world.
Ashura marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with his companions and family members in the Battle of Karbala.During Muharram, faithful across Pakistan organise majalis, religious gatherings, and processions to honour the sacrifices made at Karbala.
Religious scholars also address large congregations, highlighting the lessons of patience, justice, and steadfastness associated with the historic event.Authorities are expected to make security and administrative arrangements ahead of the observances.
