Government Responds to Concerns Over Utumishi Girls Academy Fire During National Prayer Breakfast
President William Ruto has announced a KSh 5 million scholarship programme aimed at supporting 250 students from Lunga Lunga Constituency to pursue short technical courses at the Lunga Lunga Technical and Vocational College in Kwale County.
Speaking during his development tour of the Coast region on May 23, 2026, the president said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to empower young people with practical and employable skills through TVET institutions.Each beneficiary is expected to receive about KSh 20,000 to cover six-month training programmes.
During the visit, Ruto also directed the local MP, Mangale Chiforomodo Munga, to top up the scholarship fund using Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations so that more youth from the area can benefit from the programme.The president emphasised that vocational education remains key in tackling unemployment and improving economic opportunities for young Kenyans.Apart from the scholarship announcement, Ruto laid the foundation stone for the construction of student hostels at the college.The hostel project, valued at KSh 260 million, is expected to improve accommodation capacity and learning conditions for students.
The project is part of a larger government housing plan targeting 3,600 hostel units across universities, TVET institutions, and KMTC colleges in Kwale County.
While in Kwale, the president also launched other development projects, including the KSh 139 million Lunga Lunga modern market and the Last Mile Connectivity Programme that will connect nearly 4,000 households to electricity.His Coast tour follows recent international visits to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
