Security operatives repel armed attack on NIPSS Kuru, one suspect killed

Security operatives have successfully repelled another armed attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, with one suspected attacker confirmed dead during the incident.

The attack reportedly happened late on Wednesday night, 1 July 2026, when unidentified armed men attempted to breach the institute’s security perimeter.This latest incident comes barely two weeks after a previous assault on the same facility, during which three security operatives lost their lives.

According to the Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Dr Osime Samuel, the attackers tried to target the residences of key officials within the institute, including the Acting Director of Studies, Barrister Nima Salman-Mann, and a Directing Staff member, Professor Haruna Dabin.However, security personnel responded swiftly and engaged the assailants in a gun duel, forcing them to retreat.One of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange, while others reportedly escaped with injuries.

The institute confirmed that there was no breach of its security perimeter and assured that all participants, staff, residents, and facilities remain safe.

It also stated that security agencies have intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and have further strengthened surveillance and other security measures within and around the premises.

NIPSS further reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging people to disregard misinformation capable of causing panic.Security agencies were also commended for their quick response and professionalism during the incident.
