The Nigerian Senate has clarified that the proposed amendment to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Establishment Act does not introduce a new ban on preaching or hawking in commercial vehicles.

According to the upper chamber, these activities are already classified as offences under existing laws, specifically Section 10(4) of the FRSC Establishment Act and Regulation 220 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2012.The amendment merely renumbers an existing provision from Item 36 to Item 49 in the legislative process.

The Senate emphasized that the law has been part of Nigerian legal framework since 2007, and the proposed changes are aimed at strengthening road safety measures rather than restricting religious activities.

They dismissed claims that the bill targets street preachers or limits public worship, stating it's about protecting commuters and other road users.The legislation originated from the House of Representatives and is currently under review by the Senate as a concurrence bill.Stakeholders are urged to engage through proper legislative channels before the bill's final approval.
