Senate Approves Blue Passports for Former Parliamentarians
A Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control has unanimously approved the Members of Parliament Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which proposes extending the entitlement of blue passports to dependent children under the age of 28 of former members of parliament.
The proposal, introduced by Senator Abdul Qadir, aims to bring former legislators' families in line with the existing facility available to dependent children of retired Grade-22 government officers.
Minister of State for Interior Muhammad Talal Chaudhry supported the proposal and said it would be forwarded to the federal cabinet for consideration by the competent authority.
During the discussion, committee members also examined the possible implications of the policy, including any effect on Pakistan's passport ranking, before approving the bill for the next stage of the legislative process. The meeting also focused on the disappearance of cigarettes worth Rs250 million from FBR warehouses in Swabi and Mardan.
Senators criticised the FBR's internal inquiry for allegedly holding junior employees responsible while overlooking senior officials, and questioned why the suspected officers had not been placed on the Exit Control List.FIA officials informed the committee that the investigation was still under way.
In addition, the committee reviewed the allocation of non-custom-paid vehicles to government departments, discussed the pending security arrangements for Senator Saifullah Abro, and expressed concern over the alleged misuse of official security personnel.
Members also decided to establish a three-member inquiry committee to examine an alleged abduction and forced marriage case involving an Islamabad woman, with the panel tasked to determine whether the marriage was consensual and whether any further legal action is required.
