Senate, PNP conduct security inspection ahead of Vice President Sara Duterte impeachment trial

The Philippine Senate and the Philippine National Police (PNP) carried out a security inspection at the Senate complex on Friday in preparation for the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 6 at 2 p.m.

The inspection was led by the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, retired Police Major General Alfred Sotto Corpuz, together with officials from the PNP’s Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG).

Authorities checked the Senate premises to ensure that security measures are in place for what is expected to be a high-profile and closely watched trial.Officials confirmed that additional police personnel will be deployed around the Senate to maintain peace and order throughout the proceedings.The impeachment trial is expected to follow a structured schedule, initially holding sessions every Monday to Wednesday at 2 p.m.until the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.on July 27.After the SONA, hearings will be adjusted to Tuesdays to Thursdays.

In parallel with security preparations, senators also held an all-member caucus to discuss arrangements for the formal opening of the impeachment court.The caucus was attended by members of both the majority and minority blocs, led by Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.

Vice President Sara Duterte is facing impeachment charges including culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust, bribery, and other high crimes.The House of Representatives impeached her in May, marking her second impeachment case.

The Senate formally convened as an impeachment court on May 18, while Duterte’s legal team submitted its answer on June 1, asking the court to dismiss the charges against her.
