Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka Chief Minister; D.K. Shivakumar set to take over leadership

The Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, has formally accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, marking a significant political transition in the state.

Following the acceptance of his resignation, Siddaramaiah will continue in office as caretaker Chief Minister until a new leader is formally appointed.Deputy Chief Minister D.K.Shivakumar has been named as his successor and is expected to assume the role of Chief Minister in the next phase of government formation.

According to official communication from Raj Bhavan (Lok Bhavan), the resignation submitted by Siddaramaiah has been accepted and the Council of Ministers headed by him has been dissolved.

Siddaramaiah had tendered his resignation in a one-line letter to the Governor’s office on May 28, 2026, when the Governor was reportedly away for personal reasons.

Despite stepping down, Siddaramaiah remains actively involved in political discussions and is scheduled to meet the Congress party’s central leadership to deliberate on the formation of the new state government as well as the selection of the next president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting is expected to be convened once cabinet arrangements and leadership decisions are finalised.

The transition signals an internal restructuring within the Congress party’s state leadership, with key decisions on cabinet composition and organisational roles expected to follow in the coming days.The development is being closely watched as it may shape the administrative and political direction of Karnataka under the incoming leadership of D.K.Shivakumar.
