Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka CM; DK Shivakumar to take over as new Chief Minister

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally resigned on 28th May 2026, with the resignation being accepted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot the following day.He will continue to serve as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government is formed.Deputy Chief Minister D.K.Shivakumar has been nominated to succeed him.Siddaramaiah met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on 29th May, accompanied by his son Yathindra, to discuss his future role and party matters.He declined an offer for a Rajya Sabha seat, expressing his intention to remain active in Karnataka politics rather than move to the national arena.

The transition of leadership within the Congress party is expected to be smooth, with a CLP meeting scheduled for 30th May to formalise the new leadership.

Siddaramaiah’s tenure is noted for his administrative experience, 17 Budgets presented, and efforts in social justice, secular values, and regional development, including debunking superstitions about visiting Chamarajanagar.

The political change has caused a mix of support and disappointment among his constituents, particularly in Siddaramanahundi, but the party assures a stable transition in governance.
