International King’s Cup football and entertainment event set for South African debut
Siyakholwa Kuse, once struggling with severe drug addiction and malnutrition, has made a remarkable comeback to boxing, largely thanks to the intervention and guidance of Mlandeli Tengimfene. In 2022, Kuse was found severely weakened, weighing just 45kg and needing rehydration through a drip.
Tengimfene, who previously helped another boxer, Sinethemba Kotana, rescued Kuse by providing a stable training environment in Cambridge, nurturing his talent and focusing on regaining his fitness.
Kuse’s talent as an amateur had already created a lot of hype, and he had notable wins over Sivenathi Nontshinga and Nhlanhla Tyirha, though he also faced setbacks such as losing to Xolisa Magusha for the SA title in 2019.
Through careful planning, mentorship, and moving between trainers including Bernie Pailman, Vusi Mtolo, and Manny Fernandes, Kuse regained his form and titles.
His victories include reclaiming the SA mini flyweight title, winning the ABU belt in December 2023, and most recently, capturing the WBC mini flyweight world title at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni.
Kuse’s success is celebrated across South Africa, particularly in kuGompo City, and represents not only personal triumph over addiction but also the broader principle that every person deserves a second chance.
