A 27-year-old professional soccer player is at the center of a police investigation after his family reported him missing, only for him to return home unharmed seven days later.

Mpumalanga police confirmed they are examining whether the disappearance was staged, following claims that an unknown caller used the player's phone to demand a ransom for his release.

The player's family initially filed a kidnapping case with Witbank Police Station on 05 July 2026, prompting authorities to deploy detectives to locate the alleged victim.However, during follow-up questioning, it emerged no ransom was paid and the kidnapping did not occur.Police are now considering charges such as defeating the ends of justice for potential misconduct.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) warned against false crime reports, emphasizing that staging crimes diverts critical resources from genuine emergencies.The case highlights the complexities of balancing public safety with individual rights in criminal investigations.
