South African Furniture Industry Shows Signs of Stabilisation Amid Recovery Efforts

South Africa’s furniture manufacturing industry is showing early signs of stabilisation after more than two decades of decline.Employment in the sector has stabilised at just over 30,000, down from around 51,000 in the early 2000s, and sales grew from R19.5bn in 2024 to R21.7bn in 2025, an 11.1% increase year-on-year.

Industry leaders, however, caution that survival alone is insufficient; growth will require targeted policy support, investment in skills, and modernisation of production. The sector remains labour-intensive and integral to multiple value chains, including timber, textiles, logistics, and retail.SMEs still face pressures from rising input costs, electricity interruptions, and competition from imports.

Changing consumer trends, such as hybrid work arrangements, are supporting demand for multifunctional furniture, while easing inflation and lower interest rates have stimulated housing activity.Skills shortages across various trades, from upholsterers to industrial engineers, continue to challenge manufacturers.

The Furniture Industry Master Plan, launched in 2021, aims to bolster localisation, exports, and competitiveness, and early results suggest improvements in training, technical capacity, and market access.

Overall, while the sector is stabilising and showing promising growth signals, it remains vulnerable to economic conditions and structural challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full potential.
