SpaceX Delays Starship V3 Launch Due to Last-Minute Technical Issue

SpaceX postponed the first launch of its third-generation Starship rocket from its Starbase facility in Texas, originally scheduled for May 21, 2026.The countdown was halted just under 40 seconds before liftoff after a hydraulic pin holding the launch tower arm failed to retract.CEO Elon Musk confirmed the issue via X and announced that the company plans to attempt the launch again on Friday at 5:30 p.m.local time if the problem can be fixed.

This mission marks the first real test of Starship V3, which features upgraded Raptor engines with greater thrust and a streamlined design, a simplified booster with fewer grid fins, and improvements to prevent propellant leaks in the upper stage.

Unlike previous Starship flights, this mission will not attempt to recover the booster or the Starship vehicle; both are expected to perform soft landings in the ocean.Additionally, Starship will not reach a true Earth orbit on this flight, meaning commercial payload deployment is still pending.

The launch is particularly significant as SpaceX prepares to go public in the coming weeks, making the demonstration of Starship V3’s reliability crucial for the company's financial and operational credibility, especially given the reliance on Starlink revenue.

SpaceX previously experienced setbacks with Starship V3, including a booster explosion during testing last November, emphasizing the complexity of developing this next-generation rocket system.
