Environmental stakeholders in Tanzania have identified four key measures to address wetland degradation, including community participation, alternative livelihoods, stricter law enforcement, and inter-institutional coordination.

The Citizen investigation highlighted that limited public awareness has accelerated the destruction of the Kilombero River Valley, a critical ecosystem supporting agriculture and the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.Activities like farming, logging, and waste disposal in water catchment areas are worsening environmental decline.

Stakeholders like Ms Anabahati Mlay emphasize education and sustainable livelihoods to reduce pressure on wetlands, while others call for policy coordination and enforcement of environmental laws.

Challenges include weak implementation of land-use plans and the need for long-term community engagement to ensure conservation becomes a shared responsibility.
