Forensic expert urges proper risk assessment in Pretoria Boys High school threat case
Two Stellenbosch University students have been expelled from all university residences following a disciplinary ruling over a disturbing incident involving the invasion of a fellow student’s room and the removal of furniture.
The Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) found the students guilty of misconduct after they admitted to entering the complainant’s residence room without permission and removing his bed, mattresses and couch. The items were later placed in the residence quad following a heated inter-residence football derby between Majuba and Aurora residences on 2 March.
Aurora won the match 1–0, and tensions reportedly escalated afterwards, with earlier remarks allegedly suggesting that the complainant “would not have a bed to sleep on”.When the complainant returned to his room, he discovered his essential belongings removed and scattered, leaving him feeling humiliated and violated.
His mother raised concerns that the incident may have been racially motivated, though the disciplinary committee rejected these claims, stating that there was insufficient evidence to support a racial dimension to the misconduct.
The CDC also cleared the students of deliberately scattering the complainant’s personal belongings, noting that this allegation was not proven on a balance of probabilities.
The committee strongly criticised the informal residence practice known as “bed-flipping”, describing it as an unauthorised and damaging tradition that undermines student dignity and community values.
While the students expressed remorse, pleaded guilty, and were first-time offenders nearing the completion of their studies, the CDC concluded that their actions were grossly insulting and intimidating.
As a result, they were expelled from all university residences, ordered to complete 50 hours of community service, and barred from holding leadership positions during the 2026/27 academic year.
The committee ruled that full university expulsion would be disproportionate given the absence of violence, theft or property damage, but ordered immediate removal from student accommodation.
