Study Finds Beetroot Juice Can Lower Blood Pressure in Older Adults by Supporting Oral Microbiome

Recent research has revealed that drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice twice daily for two weeks can reduce blood pressure in older adults by positively influencing their oral microbiome.

The study, published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, involved 75 participants divided into two age groups: under 30 and adults in their 60s and 70s.While both groups experienced changes in oral bacteria, only older adults showed measurable reductions in blood pressure.

Nitrate, found in vegetables like beets, spinach, and celery, is converted into nitrite by specific oral bacteria, which then becomes nitric oxide—a molecule essential for relaxing and widening blood vessels.Aging naturally reduces the body's production of nitric oxide, making nitrate-rich diets particularly beneficial for older adults. In the study, beetroot juice lowered levels of Prevotella, associated with inflammation, while boosting Neisseria, which supports nitrate conversion.

These findings suggest that regular consumption of nitrate-rich vegetables could help older adults manage blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risks.

Researchers emphasize that dietary nitrate may not provide the same blood pressure benefits for younger people, although it still impacts oral bacteria.Overall, this study highlights a novel connection between diet, oral microbiome, and vascular health in aging populations.
