A new study published in Science highlights the alarming impact of drying lakebeds on carbon emissions.Researchers found that the Aral Sea, the world's largest desiccated lake, has released 204 megatonnes of carbon dioxide since the 1960s due to water loss.This phenomenon, exacerbated by climate change and human activities, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.The study emphasizes that wind-blown sediment from dried lakebeds accounts for a substantial portion of these emissions.

While the Aral Sea's case is extreme, it reflects a broader trend: over 53% of global lakes have experienced significant water loss in the past six decades.

Scientists warn that these drying lakebeds could emit carbon dioxide at rates comparable to automobile emissions, underscoring the urgent need for environmental interventions.

The research also suggests that re-flooding such areas could mitigate emissions, though challenges like water scarcity and geopolitical issues complicate solutions.
