A University of Johannesburg (UJ) study has revealed that the number of underweight children in low-resource schools across Gauteng has doubled between 2020 and 2022, with researchers warning of the long-term implications for child development.

The study, which analyzed data from 129 learners aged five to 10 in poorly resourced schools, found that underweight children increased from 6% to 12% over three years, reflecting a significant rise in nutritional vulnerability.Factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic instability, and rising food prices are cited as key contributors to this trend.Dr.

Matshidiso Sello, the lead researcher, emphasized that while long-term investments in nutrition programs have shown some positive effects, the doubling of underweight children signals a critical gap in support for low-income families.Boys in early school grades are disproportionately affected, with five times higher rates of underweight compared to girls.

The study also highlights the importance of school meal programs and collaboration between health, education, and social development sectors to address malnutrition.

Poor nutrition is linked to reduced academic performance, absenteeism, and long-term economic challenges, underscoring the need for systemic interventions to protect children's health and future prospects.
