The Supreme Court has assured that it will closely monitor reforms aimed at making the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) more secure, transparent and reliable.Hearing a batch of petitions seeking measures to prevent paper leaks and examination malpractice, a Bench comprising Justices P.S.

Narasimha and Alok Aradhe observed that the existing ad hoc approach to conducting the examination had created persistent concerns and must be replaced with a well-institutionalised system.The Court stated that it was prepared to go the extra mile to ensure that NEET becomes foolproof.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Bench that the Central Government was actively considering reforms and was willing to take extensive steps to safeguard students' interests.

The Court granted the Centre time until August 3 to submit an affidavit detailing the proposed reforms, including progress on implementing the recommendations of the high-level committee headed by former ISRO Chairman K.Radhakrishnan.

The Bench specifically sought details regarding the proposed governing board, measures to improve transparency, stakeholder representation and accountability.

It also asked the Centre to clarify whether NEET could transition to a computer-based examination similar to IIT-JEE, while highlighting concerns related to data transfer, cybersecurity and protection of candidate information.The Court emphasised that data security would be a critical requirement if such a transition is undertaken.Dr K.

Radhakrishnan informed the Court that the committee had recommended 35 long-term and around 60 short-term reforms, many of which had already been implemented.According to him, these measures contributed to the largely satisfactory conduct of NEET-PG 2025, despite isolated issues such as power outages.

The Supreme Court indicated that it would continue monitoring the reform process until a robust and permanent examination framework is fully established.
