The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the inadequate compensation provided to retired chief justices and high court judges, which varies significantly across states.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant criticized the Uttar Pradesh government's challenge to an interim order directing the state to provide security to retired judges, despite paying only Rs 65,000 and Rs 60,000 for security, driver, domestic help, and other services.

The court emphasized that retired judges, who handled sensitive constitutional matters during their tenure, deserve basic facilities to maintain dignity post-retirement.

The bench questioned whether Rs 60,000 could suffice for essential services like a driver and domestic help, highlighting the inadequacy of the current compensation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that a committee would be formed within two weeks to draft uniform guidelines, with recommendations expected within three months.The decision underscores the judiciary's role in ensuring retired judges receive adequate support, balancing dignity with practicality.
