Supreme Court mandates strict timelines for bail decisions and judgment delivery in High Courts
The Supreme Court of India has decided to hear a suo motu case related to the unnatural death of 32-year-old actor-model Twisha Sharma, who was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, just five months after her marriage.The matter will be heard on May 25 by a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi.
The case was reportedly registered based on media reports and surrounding circumstances that raised concerns regarding the fairness of the investigation.
Twisha Sharma’s family has accused her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law, retired district judge Giribala Singh, of dowry harassment, mental and physical torture, and murder.The accused side has denied these allegations and maintained that Sharma died by suicide.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to allegations of institutional bias, delays in filing the FIR, questions surrounding CCTV footage, and concerns about the handling of forensic evidence.The National Commission for Women also took suo motu cognisance of the matter and described the death as suspicious.Meanwhile, a Bhopal court sent Samarth Singh to seven days of police custody and ordered seizure of his passport.The investigation is currently being handled by a Special Investigation Team.
Additionally, the Madhya Pradesh government has approached the Jabalpur High Court seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh.
The high court has also ordered a second post-mortem examination by a specialised AIIMS Delhi team after concerns were raised regarding the initial autopsy report.Despite the controversy, Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar has stated that the investigation so far points towards suicide and not murder.
