Bilawal stresses protection of Gilgit-Baltistan’s rights ahead of elections
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Monday formally dismissed the complaint filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The petition, submitted by former PTI secretary general Omar Ayub Khan, had sought the removal of the CEC over alleged constitutional violations and irregularities during the February 8 general elections.
According to an official letter sent to PTI on May 21, the SJC examined the matter in its February 11 meeting, reviewed all arguments and evidence, and decided to reject the petition after due consideration.
The PTI had earlier alleged bias by the Election Commission against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, citing his de-seating, disqualification from elections for five years, criminal proceedings, and removal from party leadership positions. The party also claimed that ECP unfairly allocated reserved seats and acted contrary to Supreme Court directions on timely elections. The SJC's dismissal confirms that it found no merit in PTI's allegations, maintaining the independence of the election regulatory process. This decision comes after a previous 2024 petition where PTI had challenged CEC and other ECP members on similar grounds.
The council’s ruling underscores adherence to constitutional procedures and proper review mechanisms in handling complaints against election authorities.
