Tanga City has implemented a multi-faceted anti-drug program called 'Focus on Youth, Not the Substance' under the TangaYetu initiative, targeting 178 streets across 27 wards.

The project, led by the Gift of Hope Foundation in partnership with Tanga City Council and supported by Foundation Botnar, combines grassroots outreach, treatment referrals, rehabilitation services, and public awareness campaigns.

Key components include addressing health complications like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, economically empowering youth, and supporting women affected by substance use.Bandawe, a former drug user and foundation leader, emphasizes the program's goal of creating informed communities equipped to tackle drug abuse.The initiative also focuses on reducing risky behaviors by providing skills training and opportunities for young people.Officials note that collaboration between government, civil society, and international partners is crucial for sustainability.Community involvement remains vital to identify at-risk individuals, connect them to services, and prevent initial engagement with drugs.The program's success hinges on both institutional support and sustained local participation.
