Tanzania Achieves Significant Reduction in Drug Trafficking and Substance Abuse in 2025

Tanzania has seen a notable improvement in its fight against drugs, reporting a 55.97 percent decrease in cannabis seizures during 2025.This drop is linked to stronger enforcement, collaboration between agencies, and public awareness campaigns.

Professor Palamagamba Kabudi presented the 2025 National Drug Situation Report in Dodoma, showing that cannabis remained the most seized drug at 1,017.26 tonnes, although lower than previous years. The government’s systematic destruction of large cannabis farms in 2024 and educational programs contributed to this reduction.Border control measures proved effective too, with khat seizures rising by 42.88 percent, reflecting improved detection rather than increased trafficking.

Seizures of synthetic drugs like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, MDMA, and MDA highlight Tanzania's role as both a transit and consumer country. For the first time, authorities confiscated 29.52 tonnes of Kratom mislabeled as fertilizer, indicating traffickers’ evolving methods.

The Drug Control and Enforcement Authority, together with security agencies, also seized precursor chemicals and controlled medicinal substances to prevent illegal use.Courts handled over 1,100 drug-related cases with more than 1,000 convictions, while authorities confiscated assets exceeding 3.3 billion Tanzanian shillings linked to drug crimes.

The government also supported over 85,000 people through mental health, rehabilitation, and treatment services, showing a commitment to addressing both supply and demand.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government emphasizes drug control as a public health and security priority, with ongoing public education campaigns and collaboration with local and international partners to maintain a drug-free Tanzania.
